I see that the Network icon still does not appear on the desktop unless you select "classic view". I'm talking build 5342. Also can anyone or someone please explain to me how I can get it to show all the other computers on my network? I have a workgroup (not a domain) with 5 other computers. I've tried to do all the usual setup items but I must be missing something. Is there a "search for computers" like in XP. If so where is it located? All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Frank

Network...?
If you right click the Desktop, select Personalise, check the top left hand corner of the window and see "Change desktop icons" or something of that affect :o)

Zack...that hasn't worked since...ever! Not in any builds I've used.
I've complained about it forever and they keep saying it'll be fixed in the next build. Never is! Anyway, all I really want is to be able to see all the other computers on my network. How can I do that? Frank
This has been fixed in 5365, I just put the cool new network icon on the desktop through procedures described by Zack. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Yes, but the "cool new network icon" doesn't give you a view of the other computers in your Workgroup. At least it doesn't here. I've bugged this saying that I know that My Network Places has always been flaky, but there needs to be a transparent way for end users to view the other computers on the lan. Clicking on the Domain/Group on the tool bar doesn't help.
I was able to connect to XP and Linux desktops and created shortcuts to them, which I put in a folder called "Network" on my desktop. Apparently even though I've shared my Home directory on Vista, I'm still not allowed to access it from the other computers. And there's some problem with Samba because I can access Linux from Vista but not vice versa. Naturally this interoperability won't be that important to MS. ;-)

On the contrary Malke, I see both my Computers, in Network when I access it from either the Start Menu Panel or Desktop link 5365. No need to type in a command through Run, or search for it through the Start Menu and I am able to browse the contents without any issues. :) -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Hmmm.. Well I must be doing something wrong then. When I click on the Network link in the Start Menu Panel, it opens a window but there is nothing in it. If I click on the drop-down arrow next to Domain (no domain here though) I see the name of my Workgroup with a checkbox next to it. Should I check this? The Workgroup name shows correctly in Computer Name - IOW I'm not incorrectly part of a domain.

I'm not going to dl 5365. I'm tired of installing worthless builds that still have previous problems. I've bastardized 5342 to the point of being unrecognizable yet slightly functional. I'm not a developer (whatever that is!) and all I try to do is to see how functionally builds are and report bugs. I've now got 5342 on line as a semi-production unit. But I've got to tell you, it functions like an Alpha build (i.e., barely usable), not a beta. In over ten years of beta testing, I've never seen such poor excuses for later builds as I have for Vista. Did all the really intelligent ones retire, leave or simply burn out? Where are the young lions..? Are there any left? I'll wait for the public beta...no more builds for me. Mark me frustrated and deeply disappointed. Frank

A Workgroup. I double-checked that this setting is correct in System>Computer Name and it does show that I am part of a Workgroup, as it should be.

Please note that builds 5342, 5365 are interim builds and are not of the same quality as CTP (Community Technology Previews). I am not a developer, but I am curious, I want to learn, submit feedback and help make this release of Windows great. Like it or not, by next year, this is what you are gonna get on the computer you purchase preloaded.
It has also been noted that Feedback submitted through the regular channels, such as BETA Client, Vista Sentiments are read by the Vista Team and taken into consideration. It does not have to be for the RTM release, but possibly the first Service Pack or a future version of Windows. I see progress being made with each build, I couldn't use the Internet in 5308 and 5342, now I can in 5365. Network browsing is working for me, explorer is stable and its just getting better in general.
I would also take this opportunity to submit feedback, since the focus of these recent interim releases are targetted at fixing bugs. Why not take advantage of it? :) -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Malke Excuse me! I started this thread and neither Andre or Zake can fix the
Network/icon/workgroup problem. Until the developers fix it use a work around. If your nice, I'll tell you the best one and how to implement it. Frank
Andre Da Costa [Extended64] wrote:

Good morning, Andre. Thanks for continuing with this. Here is the setup:
Original box - XP Pro on drive 0, data on drive 1. Has been in a network consisting of boxen running SUSE 9.3 (2 machines), XP Pro (2 machines), and XP Home (1 machine) for years. So we know the network is fine under XP Pro.
What I do to test Vista is remove drive 0 and replace it with an 80GB Seagate that I have just for Vista. I unplug drive 1 and install Vista. Then after Vista is up I connect drive 1. Then usually after a short time I get too irritated with Vista to continue so I put the XP drive back. ;-)
This time I have actually left the Vista drive in and given it a permanent home in the drive cage!
So to answer your question, the box has a unique name, gets its IP via DHCP (Linksys router), Simple File Sharing is not turned on because I have a mixed OS network and I don't enable Guest. Naturally I have identical user accounts/passwords on the system and there are no null passwords.
I will continue to play with this to see what's going on, but I'm sure the networking will get better as Vista moves to a more finished state. Thanks for all your input.
And to fb - I didn't realize you were the OP since you started the thread with the name "Frank". Certainly you can rant if you want to expend that energy. I just wanted to keep the thread on target for actually addressing problems in a constructive way.

Installed Vista... works great, only one problem... I used to be able to connect to the internet... now it will only let me connect to my home network... not the internet... what do I do?
Thanks in advance, Josh
Try opening your XP style network settings for an easier look around - http://www.vistabase.co.uk/welcome.php?subcats/settings/xpstylenetwork
Check that IPv6 and all the irrelevant protocols aren't checked, and make sure the IPv4 settings are correct, including the DNS entries. Are you on a workgroup or a domain?

I'm on a workgroup... It it supposed to be set up automatically (as in obtaining the ip address, and the dns & DHCP servers...) So I have no clue as to what has happened.
